Once the cemetery of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, the Fossar de les Moreres became a mass grave during the Siege of Barcelona (1713–1714), holding the bodies of the city’s defenders. A place of memory, it symbolizes the sacrifice of the Catalans who fell on 11 September 1714, the day Barcelona fell to the troops of Philip V — a date that later became the National Day of Catalonia (Diada Nacional de Catalunya). Redesigned in 1989 and fitted in 2001 with a commemorative flame, it remains today a site of remembrance and tribute, comparable to a “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” Located in the heart of the Ribera district, next to Santa Maria del Mar and the Passeig del Born, it hosts political, cultural, and social events every year.
