Built in the 12th century on part of Barcelona’s Roman wall, the Casa de l’Ardiaca was rebuilt in the late 15th century by Archdeacon Lluís Desplà in a style combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. In the 19th century, after the disentailment, it passed into the hands of bourgeois owners who added a cloister-style courtyard and redesigned the interiors. In 1895, it became the headquarters of the Barcelona Bar Association, when the famous modernist mailbox by Lluís Domènech i Montaner was installed. Acquired by the City Council in 1919, it has since housed the Historical Archive of Barcelona. Restored after the Civil War, its façades were remodeled in the 1950s–60s. Today, it is listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
