La Balmesiana

Joan Rubió Bellver (Reus, 1871-1952), a disciple and collaborator of Gaudí, designed both of these neo-medieval buildings. The first, built between 1919 and 1923, is arranged around an inner courtyard onto which several rooms open as a gallery, including the meeting room. The second, larger building was begun in 1928 but halted by the Civil War and not finished until 1940; it houses the main hall and the chapel. The stone façades, with their crenellated tower and Romanesque-inspired arcaded galleries, evoke the character of medieval defensive architecture.
