The Goddess

Created in white marble by Josep Clarà, this sculpture was installed in Plaça de Catalunya in 1928 for the 1929 International Exhibition. It depicts a seated nude woman with an enigmatic expression, in a pose reminiscent of Rodin’s art. A symbol of noucentista Mediterraneanism, the work celebrates the harmony and beauty of classical forms. At the time of its installation, the statue’s nudity caused strong controversy and it was removed after just three days, before being reinstalled in May 1929 to great public acclaim. Considered one of Clarà’s masterpieces, the original was moved in 1982 to the vestibule of the Casa de la Ciutat for preservation, replaced by a copy made by Richard Sala.
