In the heart of the historic center, Saint-Sauveur Church is one of La Rochelle’s oldest religious buildings. Founded in the 12th century by the monks of Île d’Aix, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries — burned in 1419, damaged during the Wars of Religion, and rebuilt in 1718 in a Louis XIII style, while preserving its 15th-century Gothic bell tower. Its architecture blends different eras and influences, and its interior houses artworks and maritime ex-votos, bearing witness to the faith and seafaring spirit of the people of La Rochelle. Restored and reopened in 2008, Saint-Sauveur remains a place of worship and remembrance — a symbol of resilience and historical heritage in the city.
