Fort Boyard

Designed in the 19th century to protect the Rochefort arsenal from English attacks, Fort Boyard was already outdated when completed in 1857, as artillery advances had made it obsolete — earning it the nickname “Fort of the Useless.” After a brief period as a prison, the fort was abandoned and fell into ruin before being listed as a Historic Monument in 1950. It experienced a true media revival in 1989, becoming the set of a cult television show broadcast worldwide. Today, although not open to the public, Fort Boyard remains a powerful symbol of Charente-Maritime, admired from the boat tours that cross the straits, facing the ocean.
