Allegory of Commerce

The Allegory of Commerce, located at the entrance of the Ciutadella Park on Passeig de Lluís Companys, was conceived as part of the 1882 decorative program for the park’s gates. Carved in stone from designs by the Vallmitjana brothers and executed by Josep Carcassa, it depicts the god Mercury, a traditional symbol of commerce. Leaning on crates and wearing his winged helmet, Mercury holds a purse and the caduceus, while a putto records accounts beside him. This academic-style sculpture highlights the progressive ideals of the time, linking commerce, industry, agriculture, and fishing as pillars of development. Despite some anatomical imperfections, it stands out for the elegance of its drapery and its monumental quality, well-suited to its elevated placement.
