Allegory of Industry

The Allegory of Industry, located at the entrance of the Ciutadella Park on Passeig de Lluís Companys, was commissioned in 1883 to the Vallmitjana brothers and carved in stone by Josep Carcassa based on their designs. Inaugurated in November 1884, it was the first of the four sculptures designed to crown the park’s gates (together with Commerce, Agriculture, and Fishing). It depicts a goddess of classical inspiration, with a bare bust, leaning on a large cogwheel, the traditional symbol of industry. Despite some anatomical disproportions, the work retains a monumentality and elegance suited to its decorative role and progressive symbolism.
