Antic Convent de Sant Agustí

Founded in 1349, the Augustinian convent of Sant Agustí was for four centuries the heart of the neighbourhood that bears its name. Gradually expanded — the great cloister was built between 1473 and 1478, the smaller one between 1580 and 1589 — it did not survive the 1714 siege: bombarded and largely destroyed, it housed the Academy of Mathematics from 1720 before being partially demolished to make way for a military barracks. Of the medieval complex, a lateral nave of the church and the west wing of the 15th-century Gothic cloister still remain. On the Plaça de Sant Agustí Vell, a window bearing a coat of arms and a Renaissance-style doorway dated 1650 stand as silent witnesses to the site's former splendour.
