The Three Chimneys Gardens (Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies) are located between Poble-Sec and Sants-Montjuïc. They take their name from the three towering red-brick chimneys (72 m high) of the former La Canadenca power plant, a pioneer in Spain and Europe since the late 19th century. Built in 1881 and later expanded in 1908 and 1912, the factory left a strong mark on Barcelona’s industrial and social history. In 1919, a historic workers’ strike paralyzed the country for 44 days and achieved the 8-hour working day, making Spain the first country to establish it by law. The plant was demolished in 1987, but the three chimneys were preserved as a symbol of industrial heritage. Today, they stand tall over the park, where visitors can also see remnants of old machinery turned into sculptures.
