English version The Portal de Santa Madrona, built in 1378, is the only remaining gate of Barcelona’s medieval walls. It was erected alongside the expansion of the Drassanes Reials (Gothic shipyards) and served as a strategic access point, controlling entry to the city and defending it from potential enemies. In the 18th century, it was reinforced with the Baluard de Santa Madrona (1775-1776), a triangular bastion built to protect the naval zone, crucial for the construction of the royal fleet and maritime trade. Artillery was once stationed here, and the tower preserved the drawbridge mechanism. Saint Madrona, co-patron of Barcelona with Saint Eulàlia, is depicted holding a ship and a martyr’s palm. Today, the gate opens only on special occasions such as the festivals of Santa Eulàlia and Santa Madrona, featuring parades with giants, capgrossos and historical reenactments (La Coronela, els Miquelets), which recall the city’s military and popular heritage. Free entry, on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month.
