Bust of Francesc Carreras i Candi

The bust of Francesc Carreras i Candi (1862-1937), Catalan historian and politician, was installed in 1975 in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Carved in marble by Jacinto Bustos Vassallo, it portrays the scholar in a realistic style, unclothed, and set on a pedestal. As the first professor of Catalan History at the Estudis Universitaris Catalans, Carreras i Candi also served as a city councillor, president of the Academy of Fine Letters, and editor of historical sources from Barcelona. Best known for his Geografia de Catalunya (1908-1918), he remains the only historian commemorated among the park’s monuments.
