Monument to the Catalan Volunteers

The Monument to the Catalan Volunteers in Ciutadella Park, a bronze work by Josep Clarà inaugurated in 1936, pays tribute to the Catalans who died in France and elsewhere for freedom during the world wars. It depicts a naked man advancing with raised arms, holding a bayonet and an olive branch, symbolising both struggle and peace. Conceived as early as 1922, the work faced several delays due to the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. During the Franco regime, the statue was mutilated and its dedication removed, before being restored in 1954 and again in 2011, regaining its integrity and original inscription. The monument stands out for its sober and expressive Noucentista style.
