Bust of Manuel Milà i Fontanals

The bust of Manuel Milà i Fontanals (1818-1884), inaugurated in 1908 in Ciutadella Park, is a work by Joan Rubió i Bellver and Manuel Fuxà. Made of marble and stone, it pays tribute to this professor of literature at the University of Barcelona, poet, and folklorist, regarded as one of the initiators of the Jocs Florals. The monument’s installation was part of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of these poetic contests, with the intention of annually honouring the great figures of Catalan culture. Despite his doubts about the future of the Catalan language, Milà i Fontanals ensured that the Jocs Florals were reserved exclusively for it, thus reinforcing its role in the cultural life of the time.
