Caixa Buildings, Plaça Vila de Madrid

Plaça Vila de Madrid occupies the site of the former Discalced Carmelite convent of Santa Teresa — a 17th-century building burned in 1936. The square was laid out during the 1940s and 1950s. The large residential buildings that close its southern side down to Carrer del Duc were designed by Adolf Florensa for the Caixa de Pensions in 1946. Their façades draw on the architectural register of mid-19th-century streets in the surrounding area, aiming for urban continuity. Stylistically, these buildings belong to post-war Noucentisme, with ornamental details borrowed from the Isabelline era: flower vases and terracotta reliefs typical of the 1850s.
