Font de la Maja madrilenya

Inaugurated in 1958 as part of the replanning of Plaça Vila de Madrid — on the site of the former Carmelite convent of Santa Teresa — this fountain by Lluís Montané Mollfulleda pays tribute to the city that gives the square its name. It is decorated with a Madrileña maja in her most characteristic dress, with the coats of arms of Madrid and Barcelona at the base. The four water jets emerge from fish with curled tails, while shells at the four corners echo the forms of the maja's ruffles and the basins.
