Created at the end of the 19th century on the site of Philip V’s former fortress, the Ciutadella Park was Barcelona’s first major public park, conceived as a “green lung” for a rapidly industrializing city. Enhanced during the 1888 Universal Exhibition, it houses the famous monumental waterfall designed with Gaudí’s participation, a boating lake, several museums, the zoo, and modernist buildings such as the “Castle of the Three Dragons.” The park features remarkable biodiversity with century-old trees and more than one hundred bird species, including a large colony of herons. A true open-air museum, it displays iconic sculptures such as La Dama del Paraigua and the stone Mammoth. Its avenues and landscaped areas, including the Plaça d’Armes, the Glorieta of Transsexual Sonia, and the Paseo de los Tilos leading to the Arc de Triomf, make it one of Barcelona’s most emblematic sites, blending nature, history, art, and culture.
