The Parliament of Catalonia, housed in the former arsenal of the Ciutadella, is an imposing building whose history dates back to the 18th century. Built by the military engineer Próspero de Verboom between 1716 and 1748 as a military facility, it is one of the few surviving remnants of the fortress ordered by Philip V to control Barcelona, along with the governor’s palace and the chapel. With its robust style, cross-shaped layout, central dome, four inner courtyards and a façade of Montjuïc stone and red tiles, it was converted at the beginning of the 20th century into the Municipal Museum of Art. In 1932 it became the seat of the Parliament of Catalonia, until its closure during Franco’s dictatorship. In 1980, with the restoration of democracy, the building regained its parliamentary function, hosting the first legislature of the restored Catalan autonomy.
