The political and historical heart of Barcelona, the Plaça de Sant Jaume is home to two iconic buildings: the Palau de la Generalitat (Government of Catalonia) and the Casa de la Ciutat (City Hall). In Roman times, it already hosted the forum of Barcino, dominated by a temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus. The Palau de la Generalitat, with its Gothic and Renaissance style, dates back to the 15th century and preserves remarkable elements such as the Pati dels Tarongers and Roman columns from the 2nd century. Opposite stands the City Hall, built in 1369, which combines a Gothic façade with a 19th-century neoclassical entrance. Today, the square is the beating heart of the city: weddings at City Hall, popular festivals like La Mercè or Santa Eulàlia, concerts, castells (human towers), and civic demonstrations. Its location also makes it an ideal starting point to visit the cathedral, La Rambla, the Boqueria, or the Born district.
