The Lion Hunter

The sculpture The Lion Hunter, also known as The African, was installed in 1883 in the Ciutadella Park. Made of white marble by Agapit Vallmitjana i Abarca, it is one of the few realizations of Josep Fontserè’s original project, which envisioned a series of works on the theme of hunting. Commissioned by the city, the statue won a medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1884. Vallmitjana, renowned for his animal representations, is also the author of the lions at the Palace of the Generalitat, the Columbus Monument, and a sculpture placed in the Barcelona Zoo in 1992.
