Cathédrale Saint-Louis

In the heart of La Rochelle, Saint-Louis Cathedral tells the city’s eventful religious history. Built after the 1628 siege on the site of the former Protestant temple, it symbolizes the return of Catholicism. Construction began in 1742 under Jacques Gabriel and was completed in 1784. Its refined neoclassical architecture and interior adorned with frescoes by William Bouguereau make it a masterpiece of harmony and devotion. The Chapel of the Sailors, decorated with votive offerings, pays tribute to those lost at sea. Still an active place of worship today, the cathedral invites visitors to reflection and artistic discovery in the historic heart of La Rochelle.
