Crépeau l'humaniste

At the edge of the Square de la Laïcité, overlooking the Chalutiers basin, a large black disc split in two captures the last rays of the setting sun. Inaugurated in 2009, this work by François Cante-Pacos pays tribute to Michel Crépeau, the visionary former mayor of La Rochelle. Inspired by the maritime world, lock, buoy, ship’s hull, the sculpture reflects the port identity of the city. Initially controversial, it has since become an emblematic contemporary artwork, linking history and modernity along La Rochelle’s waterfront.
