Tour Saint-Nicolas

Built between 1345 and 1376, the Saint-Nicolas Tower is the most imposing of La Rochelle’s three medieval towers. A true sentinel of the Old Port, it once protected the harbor entrance with a massive chain stretched to the Chain Tower. Constructed on marshy ground, it leans slightly to the east — a flaw that has become its hallmark. According to legend, the fairy Mélusine was its mysterious builder. A symbol of La Rochelle’s return to the French crown after the war against the English, it later served as a prison for Huguenots in the 17th century. Now restored, the tower regularly hosts cultural events and offers a spectacular panoramic view of the harbor, blending history and modernity.
