La Vague Géante de Christian Renonciat

In the heart of the Allée des Tamaris, a monumental concrete wave, frozen in motion, evokes both the power of the ocean and the memory of sailors lost at sea. Created in 2003 by Christian Renonciat, this artwork has become a place of remembrance, where the Association of Former Sailors lays a wreath each year in tribute to those who perished. Made from 11 molded and assembled concrete blocks, the sculpture impresses with its realism and powerful symbolism. Funded by the City of La Rochelle and several local institutions, La Vague embodies the union of art, memory, and the sea — a moving tribute to La Rochelle’s maritime spirit.
