The Cat House

Built in 1926 by architect Maurice Morguet, the Cat House is one of La Rochelle's most distinctive architectural curiosities. Its Neo-Norman style blends half-timbering and plasterwork in Basque red tones, adorned with ceramic ornaments depicting animal and plant motifs. The building owes its name to a small earthenware cat perched atop the front gable, watching over the street for nearly a century. Standing at the corner of Chemin des Remparts and Rue des Deux Moulins, the house commands an unobstructed view of the Old Port entrance and the bay of La Rochelle. This whimsical architectural gem reflects the stylistic eclecticism that defines the city's built heritage.
