Built in the 15th century, the Lantern Tower is the last surviving medieval lighthouse on the Atlantic coast. Standing 55 meters high, its Gothic spire once guided sailors safely into the port of La Rochelle. Converted into a prison in the 17th century, it houses over 600 carvings left by prisoners — privateers, sailors, and political opponents — powerful traces of the city’s maritime and human history. Nicknamed the Tower of the Four Sergeants, it also stands as a symbol of resistance and the fight for freedom. Carefully restored, it now blends history and contemporary art, featuring works by Cabu, Wolinski, Pincemin, and Honegger. From its summit, visitors can admire a breathtaking view over the port and the ocean.
