Inaugurated in 1884 to supply the neighborhood’s residents, especially with fish and seafood, the Barceloneta Market has remained a central hub of local life. Designed by Antoni Rovira i Trias in a modernist style, it replaced the open-air stalls that had existed since the 18th century, when the fishermen’s quarter was created in 1753. In 2007, architect Josep Miàs carried out a renovation that modernized the space while preserving its wrought-iron structure and brick walls. The market now features elevators, air conditioning, solar panels (the first market in Barcelona to use them), restaurants, and a mezzanine dedicated to gastronomic activities. Today, it blends tradition and modernity, while also committing to sustainability, thanks to its waste separation and recycling plan, which was awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
