Font del Geni Català

The Font del Geni Català, located in Pla de Palau, is a monumental Neoclassical fountain inaugurated in 1856 in honor of José Bernaldo de Quirós, Marquis of Campo Sagrado and Captain General of Catalonia between 1824 and 1827. The fountain is topped by a winged figure symbolizing the “Catalan Genius”, while at its base stand four sculptures representing the Catalan provinces and four lion heads, pouring water symbolizing the Llobregat, Ter, Ebro, and Segre rivers. The exact authorship of the main sculpture remains uncertain: it is attributed either to Faust Baratta, an Italian sculptor based in Barcelona, or to Josep Anicet Santigosa, who also worked on the monument to Galceran Marquet.
