Joan Miró Park

The Joan Miró Park, developed on the former site of the municipal slaughterhouse, covers the equivalent of four Eixample blocks. Designed as a multifunctional space, it offers visitors diverse areas: a pine grove with playgrounds, a palm grove with pétanque courts, and a large dog-friendly area. As the first example of reusing an obsolete urban site after the democratic transition, it illustrates the strategy of revitalising peripheral neighbourhoods and creating large, high-quality public spaces. Vegetation dominated by palms, pines, and eucalyptus shapes a Mediterranean landscape enriched with many other species. Biodiversity is promoted through dedicated gardens that attract birds, butterflies, and local wildlife. On the artistic side, the park is home to Dona i Ocell, the monumental trencadís sculpture by Joan Miró (22 m), now a symbol of Barcelona. The park also features a 6,000 m² meadow, flower-covered pergolas, and an elegant public library surrounded by water, making it both a green, cultural, and emblematic landmark of the city.
