Drac de ferro

A gigantic seven-metre-high dragon has guarded the Espanya Industrial Park since 1987. Designed by Basque artist Andrés Nagel, this imposing 150-ton steel sculpture combines fantastic shapes – a serpent’s body, lion’s claws, eagle’s wings – but hides a playful side: its open jaws contain a slide for children. As an icon of the park, it connects to Barcelona’s tradition as the “city of a thousand dragons,” where these mythical creatures appear everywhere: in stone, wrought iron, mosaic, or stained glass, clinging to façades, balconies, or cornices, in reference to the legend of Saint George (Sant Jordi).
