Sculpture Carmela

First shown in 2016 as part of an exhibition organised by the Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música Foundation, this work by Jaume Plensa was ultimately claimed by the public and made permanent. The artist agreed to loan it to the city for an initial eight-year period, renewable. The female bust is extremely flat when seen face-on, yet reads as convincingly three-dimensional from certain angles. It reproduces the face of a fourteen-year-old Barcelona girl photographed by Plensa in 2013, associated with the transition between childhood and adult life. The circular base serves as a bench.
