The Teatre Grec Gardens, created for the 1929 International Exposition on Montjuïc hill, were originally conceived as a rose garden designed by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. They were built on a former quarry, where an amphitheatre inspired by ancient Greece and designed by Ramon Reventós was constructed. Today, this space hosts the Barcelona Grec Festival, one of the city’s most important cultural events of the summer. The gardens stand out for their geometric layout, pergolas, terraces, flowerbeds, and rich biodiversity: roses, aromatic plants, bougainvillea, jasmine, ash trees, cypresses, and remarkable species such as the lagunaria and the coral tree. An old 1929 music pavilion, now used as a seasonal restaurant, along with panoramic terraces, offers exceptional views over Barcelona and Montjuïc. Both a landscaped, cultural and historical space, the Teatre Grec Gardens combine natural heritage, architecture, and performing arts, making them a symbol of the dialogue between nature and culture.
