University of Barcelona — Historic Building

Built on the site of Barcelona's old city walls, this colossal neo-Romanesque building is one of the first great constructions of the Eixample. Architect Elies Rogent began the project in 1863, and classes started in 1871. Its 129-metre façade on the Gran Via is dominated by a central body flanked by two wings. Inside, two symmetrical cloisters — one for Sciences, one for Humanities — enclose gardens and fountains with a medieval atmosphere. The upper floor houses the ornate Paranimf, a ceremonial hall decorated in plateresque and mudéjar styles.
