Built on the former site of the textile factory La España Industrial (1847-1969), this park in Sants-Montjuïc represents the transformation of former industrial land in 1980s Barcelona. Opened in 1985 after strong community involvement, it also includes a large sports complex built for the 1992 Olympic Games. The park is centered around a vast 10,000 m² lake – the second largest in the city – surrounded by lawns, Mediterranean groves (pines, holm oaks, plane trees) and shaded walkways. Today, modern systems supply it with groundwater, reducing the use of drinking water. Artistically, it features several remarkable sculptures: the monumental dragon-slide by Andrés Nagel, Neptune (1881) by Manuel Fluxà, Modern Venus (1929) by Persejo, along with works by Antoni Alsina, Enric Casanovas, Pablo Palenzuelo and Anthony Caro. The whole site is dominated by nine striking light towers designed by architect Luis Peña Ganchegui, which define the park’s identity. Today, Espanya Industrial is both a green space, a family leisure area, and a testimony to Barcelona’s industrial and cultural history.
